Off the coast of Long Island a commercial airliner is hit by a surface-to-air missile. Quickly a fanatical group from the Middle East claims responsibility. But when CIA case agent Michael Osbourne investigates the site he finds a man shot with the signature of an old adversary called "October". Years ago this former KGB-trained expert assassin also killed Osbourne's girl friend. While 'October' starts killing the few people involved in the crime, Osbourne gets closer and closer to the shocking truth behind the act of terror. A truth which also includes members of the High Society in Washington...This is the first Daniel Silva book that I read so far. I had it on my shelf for quite a long time but hesitated to read it since other books with the subject of assassination were kind of dull. Luckily "The Mark of the Assassin" turned out to be a nice surprise. It features strong characters, is easy to read and fast-paced, well entertaining and it also has some humor in it.On top of that the book turns out to be highly political. It becomes evident that politicians and the industry in the USA are involved in the shooting down of the airliner and they all benefit from it. This last aspect makes you wonder if a scenario like that is possible. (Thinking of the war in Iraq I now believe it is!)At first I was a bit disappointed in the ending of the story. But now that I learned that there is a follow-up book with the main character Osbourne this ending is explained. I sure will read "The Marching Season" soon.
I enjoyed this book a great deal, even though I read it on a 747 flying out of Kennedy Airport towards London! This is Silva's second book, and the first to deal with the threat of international terrorism. It is quite topical in a sense, considering the fate of TWA600. It is an excellent thriller, fast paced, with well-developed characters. Clearly a good training for Silva, since his character development in his subsequent novels was outstanding. I do not agree with some other reviewers who state that the plot is not believable. I believe that it is all too believable. The story starts when an international airliner is downed by a missile fired from a terrorist on a boat. The terrorist kills his accomplice in a signature fashion, which comes to the attention of a CIA analyst, Michael Osborne, who has his own personal score to settle with the terrorist. And so we plunge into the intriguing and scary world of international terrorism, and the anti-terrorist efforts spearheaded by Osborne. Of course, there are some interesting sub-plots woven in as well, often dealing with the personal lives of the main players. It was a damn good read, and can I strongly recommend this book.
A good friend introduced me to Daniel Silva with his first book, The Unlikely Spy. While that was a fictionalized account of how the Allies deceived Hitler as to the location of the D Day landing, this is pure fiction. Or is it? A CIA operative who has a strong moral code and a highly competent professional assassin who serves a secret group made up of the worlds movers and shakers are destined throughout the pages of the book to end up in a confrontation that ends up raising more questions than it settles. Entertaining writing, fast paced action, believable characters and enough allusion to actual people or events to keep you wondering where the fiction blends with the present day. It's a dangerous world out there; especially if you are letting Daniel Silva describe it to you.
The Mark Of The Assassin (originally to be titled The Society) is an exciting, fast-moving thriller that is well-worth reading. It has it all...interesting characters, good plot and sub-plots, lots of action and some good surprises. Silva can expect another bestseller when this book goes on-sale in March (possibly April); however, it is not without some minor flaws, such as occasional weak dialogue and a few secondary characters which could have been developed more. I think you'll be able to easily overlook these flaws. The Mark Of The Assassin is a very good second effort by Silva, but it is not as good as his previous thriller, The Unlikely Spy (which is now out in paperback). Enjoy!
October(DelaRoche) plays the perfect villain in this book. A trained killer from the K.G.B. Now a contract killer for this secret committee he does his job with a relish. The committee that employs October is dedicated to destabilizing the world by creating anarchy. One of October's contract hits results in a terrorist group being hit by the United States. The book stays at a nonstop pace until the very end. Osbourne who also has a history with October has a tremendous struggle that goes to the bitter end. The conclusion of the book leaves room for the sequel. An excellent book.
Ever find yourself wanting to be entertained, desiring to be educated, but don't want to have to think too hard? Well, here's a fast read that will have you actually look forward to going to bed at night for an hour or so of reading before the lights go out. The geography is accurate, the dialogue is witty and crisp, and the vocabulary is educational. The character development, however, seemed to be somewhat superficial, and the plot was too revealing while it was developing. I would prefer the surprises in the plot to "hit me hard" at the end of each chapter, instead of slowly revealing themselves page by page. A reader will "know" how the book ends even before he finishes reading it, and that was somewhat disappointing to me.
