Unvollständig!!Es sind gerade Mal die ersten neun Kapitel.Hierbei halt es sich entweder um den spektakulärsten Fehldruck oder schlicht um Betrug. Die Formatierung weißt bereits auf schlampige Umsetzung eines PDF hin, aber die Tatsache, dass es sich nur um früh das halbe Buch handelt ist eine Frechheit!
In dieser Originalfassung auf Englisch liest es sich noch besser, als auf Deutsch. Die altertümliche Wortwahl ist auf den ersten paar Seiten etwas ungewohnt, nach einer Weile findet der Leser aber gut hinein und findet Oscar Wildes Wortspiele und Verbildlichungen charmant.Die Charaktere sind gut ausgearbeitet, besonders Lord Henrys Neugier und Zynismus kommen gut zur Geltung und sind, neben Dorian Grays Wunsch nach ewiger Jugend, Motor der Handlung.Was würden Sie tun, wären Sie ewig jung und wohlhabend?
As a marvellous tale on the impermanence of beauty, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is fascinating, sad, inspiring and complete at the same time. A sufficient, well-constructed story provides the basis for a multitude of wonderfully expressed thoughts and aphorisms on morality and beauty, but also on honesty with oneself and the decision between the courage and inconvenience to be "good" on the one hand, and the comfort to only take what can be taken from benevolent fellows on the other hand. This book also shows that in the end of a day or a life, the only thing that matters is one's peace with oneself. To be able to look into the mirror without horror. For these precious thoughts and for the beautiful and witty language of Wilde, this book is worthwhile reading to anyone, I claim.
Ich kann dieses kleine Büchlein jedem wärmstens ans Herz legen der sprachlichen Tiefgang, Scharfsinnigkeit und Lebensphilosphie in einen Buch transportiert haben möchte. Die Dialoge sind einfach ein Genuss. Story dreht sich um ein klassisches Motiv(e), da hab ich persönlich nicht so viel mitgenommen, ist aber insgesamt sehr gut und absolut zeitgemäß. Wer das gute Stück auf Englisch wagt, braucht hier und da ein wenig Geduld mit dem Wörterbuch, es lohnt sich aber allemal!
Do not buy this book! I did not think you can fail at printing a novel, how wrong I was.There were many floors with this version:- The prologue is missing.- There are random line breaks in the middle of sentences.- The text ONLY INCLUDES THE FIRST NINE CHAPTER (out of 20)I strongly advice against buying this version of the novel!
Had to read this piece as an undergrad but never made it past page 60 or so. I admit, my past-me couldn't appreciate literary artistry. A couple of years later I picked it up again and finished it in a few days without any problems, on the contrary, I greatly enjoyed the ride. Wilde's famous novel tells the story of a beautiful, young man who is granted eternal youth and embarks on a dark journey toward self-destruction. Initially, caught in the middle between the bad influence of the hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton and the good role model of the virtuous painter Basil Hallward, Dorian is more and more drawn to the seductitve influence of the former.The book is written in beautiful prose and nicely captures the luxurious lifestyle of the Victorian aristocracy. I took great pleasure in listening to Henry Wotton's philosophical theories, which were full of funny statements and witty jokes. The Picture of Dorian Gray comments on subjects like vanity and beauty, the nature of art as well as moral and sinful behavior. I also read it as a critique of the upper class, especially when it comes to interferring in the lives of common people, treating them as their playthings, that they have their fun with, until they toss them aside damaged or broken, as soon as they lose interest in them. As the book progresses it gets more and more grim and darker, entering into the realm of gothic fiction.I am extremely happy to have read this classic novel and I will probably go back to it some time in the future. It has changed my attitude toward aging for the better - I can now age without worries or sorrows, but with peace of mind and dignity :)
Habe dieses Buch für mein Studium gekauft habe aber beim Lesen gemerkt dass einige Kapitel fehlen. Es geht nur bis Kapitel 9. Bitte nicht kaufen!!!
Mit keinem Wort ist in der Produktbeschreibung genannt, dass es sich nicht um den Orginaltext handelt. Bedenkt man Schriftgröße und Bilder so ist in diese Ausgabe weniger als die Hälfte des Ursprünglichen Textes übrig. Das sollte man auf den ersten Blick sehen können.
